keratoconus specialist

Hello guys,

I was diagnosed too with keratoconus this year in march, stage 2 for my left eye and stage 3 for my right eye. I had an urgent crosslinking surgery on both eyes, after 3 months I had a done some test again and not only the crosslinking didn't work for me but actually the progression continued. As of September in just 3 months I'm at stage 3 for my left eye and and stage 4 for my right eye. Happy times

My doctor said that I would need cornea transplant but he didn't say how soon I would need to do it.
I need recommendations for a good eye hospital, and good eye surgeon specialized in keratoconus that you guys were treated by in the UK or in Europe.

You don't say whereabouts in the country you are, but the best hospitals for KC are usually the ones in the big cities, where they see a lot of patients with the condition. Moorfields Eye Hospital in London see more KC than any other hospital in the country and has at least a dozen corneal specialists and a large contact lens department. There are also good specialists in Birmingham, Leicester, Liverpool many other big cities.
Do you not wear contact lenses for your KC? You'd probably find that they would improve your vision significantly and avoid the need for surgery.

I live in Arad, Romania I have many clinics here but I wanted to get to get a second opinion for from a good specialist aboard. I have an international health insurance so I can bescialy be treated in any country. The challenge for me is to find a good doctor. I'm beginning to freak out

Do you not wear contact lenses for your KC?
I don't, my doctor recommended hard contact lenses but I was afraid to get them because I read somewhere that then don't stop the KC progression they just improve my vision and there is a risk of making my KC worse by scratching the cornea.

It's true contact lenses don't stop KC progression, but if you get well fitting lenses from a contact lens practitioner who knows about fitting KC eyes, then you should get improvement of vision without risk to your KC.
I'm afraid I don't know about specialists outside the UK, though I'm sure there are plenty that would be nearer to you. But as I said, there are plenty of corneal surgeons at Moorfields who could give you a second opinion.
